Srinagar, Mar 23: Six members of a family that was accompanying Syed Liyaqat Shah’s family who was arrested by Delhi police while returning Nepal to surrender today surrendered before the police here.
Mohammad Ashraf of Bandipora along with 6 members of his family surrendered today before police while coming from Pakistan via Nepal. Wife of Liyaqat, Akhtar-ul-Nisa along with her daughter, Jabeena, 14, today reached her ancestral home in Dardpora village, in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Akhtar-ul-Nisa said:” Liyaqat came to surrender before the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir after the application of his family for his rehabilitation under the State Government’s policy was approved by authorities.”
“We were arrested near the Nepal-India border and were told to show our identity cards. We told the police we had no identity cards, but carried Pakistani passports. They did not listen to us and arrested Liaquat, even after we clearly told them that authorities had approved Liyaqat’s return under the rehabilitation policy.”
Nissa said that there was no question of any arms being recovered from his hotel room in Delhi, as Liyaqat didn’t travel to Delhi as he was arrested in Gorakhpur only.
Nisa had crossed over to Pakistan along with her deaf and dumb daughter in 2005. Her previous husband was a militant who was killed in a gunfight with the security forces before she crossed the Line of Control (LoC).
Nisa married Liyaqat, whom she met in Pakistan. He too had been married earlier.
The village elders accompanied Nissa to the local police station this morning after they were called for questioning.
