SRINAGAR: One-way traffic was on Thursday resumed on the national highway, the only road connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, after remaining suspended for two days due to fresh snowfall and landslides.
Vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu only and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, a traffic police official said.
However, he said the 434-km-long highway, the only road connecting Union Territory (UT) Ladakh with Kashmir, and 98-km-long Mughal road, linking Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, and Anantnag-Kishtwar road also remained closed for the past 45 days on Thursday due to accumulation of snow and slippery conditions.
Traffic official said traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended on Tuesday due to fresh snowfall and landslides. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) put into service sophisticated machine and men to put through the highway.
Today, vehicles will ply from Srinagar to Jammu and no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction, he said. However, he said, Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) had to cross Qazigund, gateway of Kashmir, before 1100 hrs. ”Later, Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be allowed in the afternoon,” he said.
Official sources said that over 4,500 HMVs, including those carrying fruit and empty oil and gas tankers are stranded on this side of the Jawahar tunnel for the past over one week. These vehicles will also be allowed to leave for Jammu in the afternoon. (agencies)
