JAMMU, Jan 24: National Girl Child Day was celebrated today by various educational institutions across Jammu and Kashmir by organizing awareness programmes, discussions, symposiums, poster making competitions etc. on the theme ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’.
To celebrate the occasion, the Department of Lifelong Learning, University of Jammu (JU) organized a programme with the objective to raise awareness about the rights of girls, discuss various atrocities and inequalities that girls face in their daily lives and to increase awareness about the importance of girl education, nutrition, and health. Dr Kavita Suri, Director and Head, Department of Lifelong learning, JU, discussed in detail about the objectives of celebrating National Girl Child Day.
The Day was also celebrated by the Centre for Women’s Studies, JU by organizing a nukkad natak on the theme “Hamari Betiyaan” in the University campus. The nukkad natak was staged by the artists of Nav Durga Kala Manch. The gathering thoroughly enjoyed the nukkad natak which highlighted the issues like female foeticide, declining sex-ratio and son preference prevalent in the society. Prof Vishav Raksha, Director, Centre for Women’s Studies concluded the show by emphasizing on the fact that every individual has to come forward to remove the inequalities faced by the girls in the society.
NSS Unit of Government Degree College (GDC) RS Pura celebrated National Girl Child Day under the guidance of Principal of the college, Dr Sunita Sudan and supervision of NSS Programme Officer, Prof Bindu Kumari. In this regard, a poster making competition was organized in the college in which 25 volunteers participated and made various informative posters. This was followed by a Walkathon starting from college campus to Kotli Shah Daula and back covering a distance of 6 km. In the way, NSS volunteers sensitized the public regarding ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’.
Government College of Education Jammu organized a walkathon-cum-poster making on Girl Child Day on the theme “Beti Bachao Beti Padao”. College Principal, Dr Sangita Nagari was the chief guest on the occasion. About 100 students/NSS volunteers attended the programme. On the occasion, students prepared posters depicting the importance of educating the girl child. Addressing the gathering, Principal said, “There is no difference between girl and boy child and both should be treated equally by the parents and society”. She further stressed upon the contribution being made by girls in every field whether sports, literature, science, education etc. Various speakers also put forth their valuable suggestions/thoughts on the theme ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’.
To mark the occasion, NSS Unit of Government College for Women Udhampur conducted a symposium on the topic “Beti Bachao Beti Padao”. Almost all the contestants were of the opinion that saving and educating girl child is the paramount importance for the society as far as sex ratio and women empowerment is concerned. Earlier in the morning session, Sub-Judge Sandeep Kour, Secretary DLSA Udhampur shared her opinion regarding the legal update on the theme. She exhorted upon all women folk of the society to come forward and speak up regarding the violence/harassment, if any, faced by them.
NSS Wing of Government PG College Rajouri celebrated National Girl Child Day in collaboration with District Administration Rajouri. A Walkathon was flagged off from Principal office during which girls raised slogans on the theme of ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’. An awareness programme was also organized at M P Hall inside the College campus, wherein Anum Mirza (Women Welfare Officer, District Rajouri) gave a motivation lecture and stressed on the need of women education and empowerment.
GDC Bishnah organized an interactive session with the students on the occasion, under NSS and Women Development Cell. The proceedings of the programme were carried out by Prof Amit Kumar Sharma. A detailed and very informative lecture was given by Dr Seema Sudan on “Beti Bachao, Beti Padao”. Rakhi from Semester 4th and Anmol Sharma from Semester 1 recited the poems on the topic. Principal of the College, Dr Kulvinder Kour addressed the students and motivated them to bring the change in the society.
To celebrate National Girl Child Day, NSS Unit of Government Degree College, Sunderbani organized a campaign on the topic ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padao’. The programme started with a welcome note by Incharge Principal, Prof Davinder Kumar. The NSS volunteers and students also spoke at length on the topic, insisting that a safe and educated girl can tremendously contribute to the overall development of the nation. Prof Amit Kumar, NSS Programme Officer, also enlightened everyone on the benefits of educating a girl child.
GDC Thannamandi organized a symposium on the topic “Beti Bachao, Beti Padao” in connection with the celebration of National Girl Child Day under the chairmanship of Principal of the College Prof (Dr) Javaid Ahmed Qazi. Seven students of different semesters participated in the symposium. Speaking on the occasion, Prof (Dr) Javaid Ahmed Qazi advised the students to develop the human values among themselves and fight against the prevailing evils related to women in the society.
The Day was celebrated by GDC Surankote in collaboration with Women Empowerment Cell by organizing a programme on the theme “Beti Bachao Beti Padao”. Dr Mussarat Jabeen, HoD Arabic and Convener Women Empowerment Cell of the College, presented inaugural address. Prof Rani Mughal, HoD Botany and Convener Women Empowerment Cell, GDC Poonch was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Mussarat highlighted the importance of education in present day world and stressed upon the need of women education. Prof Rani Mughal, in her speech, highlighted the role of women in the contemporary society.
Carmel Convent School celebrated the National Girl Child Day by organizing a programme on the theme “Empowering Girls for Better Tomorrow”. The school girls were prepared to rise high and face all the difficulties with courage and enthusiasm. Day’s events emphasized the fact that when women are given access to relevant education and training, they can make earth a better place to live in. The School organized a number of programs to create awareness among the students about the inequalities faced by the girls in the society.
The National Girl Child Day was celebrated at Army Camp Sharifabad with an aim to promote equality among genders and motivate young girls and women to achieve their aspirations and goals fearlessly. In this regard, a video conference was carried out with first Kashmiris women IPS officer, Dr Ruveda Salam who shared her life experiences and motivated the students. Youngest Kickboxing Champion Tajamul Islam and Women Para Basketball Player Ishrat Akhter were in attendance and were instrumental in motivating the young minds.
