Govt sets up 2 committees to examine AFSPA withdrawal

JAMMU, Mar 25: The State Government has constituted two committees to examine phased withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from different parts of the State.

Replying to the resolution moved by MLA Bashir Ahmad Veeri in the Legislative Assembly seeking revocation of AFSPA, Minister of State for Home Sajjad Kichloo today said, “the State Government has constituted two committees, one for Kashmir Province and another for Jammu Province to examine the issue of phased withdrawal of AFSPA from districts that have witnessed significant decrease in militancy related activities and seen sustained peace.”

Mr Kichloo said several districts especially in Jammu province have witnessed sustained peace and normalisation.

Once the committee submits its report to the State Government, the matter will be discussed and taken up for consultation with the Union Government.

“There is no question of removing AFSFA from those districts where militancy exists and has influence,” the Minister said.

The resolution, however, was withdrawn by the member after Minister’s reply.

The State Government has identified Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal and Anantnag districts under Kashmir province and, Jammu, Udhampur, Samba and Kathua districts of Jammu province for withdrawal of AFSPA in a phased manner in the backdrop of normalisation of situation in the State and the recommendations based on Justice Verma committee.
