NC brings adjournment motion on Liaquat issue, BJP protests

JAMMU, Mar 25: Bharatiya Janata Party today protested outside the State Assembly following a ruling National Conference-sponsored adjournment motion in the House  to discuss Hizbul militant Liaquat Ali-arrested in the national capital.

National Conference MLA and provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani moved the adjournment motion in the Assembly today seeking a discussion and reply of the State Government on the arrest of Liyaqat but Speaker Mubarak Gul turned down the motion.

National Panthers Party legislators, however, created uproar and opposed the adjournment motion asserting that they will not allow the House to discuss the issue.

“Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already taken up the matter with Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and sought a probe into the affair by the National Investigation Agency,” Mr Gul said after rejecting the motion.

Talking to reporters later outside the House, Mr Wani said his party wanted to know whether Liaquat had come under rehabilitation policy.

“If he has come under this policy, there is no reason for him to be in jail. The Chief Minister has taken up the issue with the Union Home Minister, who had promised him probe,” he added.

BJP MLAs also protested and staged dharna against the Omar-led Government and National Conference for their stance on arrest of Liyaqat Ali Shah.

BJP Legislative party leader Ashok Khajuria along with three MLAs sat on dharna outside the Legislative Assembly and said, “we criticise the Government for bringing a resolution in the House over Liyaqat who is a terrorist caught by the Delhi Police. Government and NC are supporting people like him.”

He claimed that the Government has failed on all fronts, particularly security, as seen from the attacks on security personnel and civilians for over a fortnight.  (AGENCIES)
