JAMMU, Jan 25: Old and rusted ammunition unearthed in village Danwal, near Tarooti Khud of tehsil Jourian in Akhnoor tehsil were destroyed successfully by Army and Police today.
As per reports, when the earth work was being carried by a civilian of the village by using a JCB machine on Friday morning, five ammunition boxes were spotted by the JCB operator and subsequently police was informed.
As the police got information, they came into action and immediately SHO of Police Station House, Akhnoor along with SDPO, Akhnoor Ajay Sharma reached on the spot and realised that it was an old Army ammunition (80MM Motar shells).They informed the Army.
Meanwhile, a bomb disposal team from 10 Infantry Division Akhnoor, along with requisite equipments rushed to the spot and launched the operation by dispersing the gathered public from the site where ammunition was spotted. After that the whole area was taken under the police guard.
After the arrival of Army bomb disposal team, the areas was further sensitized and two more boxes of ammunition were unearthed during the search taking total recoveries to seven boxes ie. 14 shells in total.
Since it was getting dark, a was taken to carry out further sanitization of the area and destroy them decision during light hours.
During early morning, the police again cordoned off the entire area while police persons were already put in place to avoid any accident by human/ animal interface where the ammunition was unearthed.
Today morning at 10:45 am after following proper Standard Operating Procedure(SOP), all the shells were destroyed jointly by Army and Police and there was no damage to life and property during the whole process.
