KATHUA, Jan 29: The Members of Ravi river Action Committee continued protest for second consecutive day at Gandyal in Kathua district against the illegal mining during night hours in Ravi area despite ban by Government.
The protest was led by Mohinder Paul Sharma president of the Committee. He said over 200 tippers carrying the stones and Bajri excavated from the river bed left via the Ramnagar -Gandyal road towards Punjab and one tipper turned turtle during last night in the way. He said a big catastrophe has been averted as the tipper turned turtle near a Sheller.
The protestors accused the administration for their total failure in getting the ban implemented in the area. They said despite protests by the Committee the administration is not taking the cognizance of the seriousness of the issue and the Ramnagar-Gandyal link road has been totally damaged as about 200 to 300 dumpers and tippers move via that area during night hours daily.
He said it was only after the lot of struggle by the people that this road has been constructed after 30 years and now it has again been damaged due to illegal mining. Moreover illegal mining is posing a threat to environment as well as newly constructed bridge on river Ravi in the area. He said if authorities failed to implement the ban in letter and spirit, the Committee will be forced to intensify the agitation.
