Caste census not possible without NPR: Naidu

NEW DELHI:Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday said without the National Population Register (NPR), the Caste census cannot be conducted.

Mr Naidu made the remark during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha  when Ramnath Thakur of Janata Dal United (JDU) demanded that the Government go for caste census along with census in 2021.

The JD(U) lawmaker  further said that the caste census was last carried out in 1931 during the  British era. After this, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government also initiated the work  caste census in the year 2010 which could not be completed due to some reasons. Because of the non- availability of  caste enumeration, Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes are not getting adequate benefits of developmental works, Mr Thakur added.

He demanded that the Centre proceed with  caste census along with the proposed National census in the year 2021 as requested by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar several times in the past. (AGENCIES)
