AMRITSAR, Mar 28 : World Theatre day honour for the year 2013 (Gursharan Singh Theatre Commitment Award) was conferred on Balwant Thakur- the eminent theatre director of the country here today at Virsa Vihar, Amritsar (The Culture Centre of Punjab Government). The world Theatre day was established by International Theatre Institute, UNESCO, Paris in the year 1962 and is celebrated every year on 27th of March world over. The felicitation function to Award Balwant Thakur with World Theatre Day honor was organised by Manch Rang Manch Amritsar (Punjab) and was graced by a galaxy of top theatre personalities of the country.
Reading the citation, eminent theatre director Kewal Dhaliwal said that “Known as the magic man of theatre, Balwant Thakur is the most creative theatre director of the country who has over 5000 programmes to his credit and has participated over 250 National and International participations as a theatre director, which is a record in the country.
Born in 1960 in a hilly village of district Reasi (J&K), a Law Graduate of University of Jammu, he is also a Post Graduate in Mass Communication. In the cultural field he has completed three years research on the performing arts heritage of Jammu under a National senior Fellowship Award of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, which has won in 1990. After starting theatre during his early school days, he continued doing theatre, acting and direction during College and University days and finally took up theater as a full time profession with the formation of ‘Natrang’ in the year 1983. While in the University he brought best production awards for the University of Jammu and started a serious theatre movement in the Campus.
