NEW DELHI, Feb 17: Amid the media reports of Pulwama Attack case accused getting bail by the Special Court, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday clarified that Yusuf Chopan alias Mehraj-ud-din Chopan was never arrested in the Pulwama attack case that killed 40 jawan of Central Reserve Police Force on February 14, 2019.
In a statement issued by the agency, the NIA said that the accused Chopan was arrested in connection with the Jaish- e- Mohammad (JeM) conspiracy case pertaining to a criminal conspiracy hatched by senior commanders of JeM to carry out terror attacks in different parts of India including Delhi-NCR.
One hand grenade was recovered from possession of Chopan which was procured with the intention of using the same against the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir for snatching their weapons.
During the investigation in the JeM conspiracy case, seven Over Ground Workers (OGWs) were arrested. However, out of which 6 accused were charge sheeted in two charge-sheets and Yousuf Chopan was not charge-sheeted due to inadequate evidence, the NIA said in the statement.
Special NIA Court, New Delhi in an order pronounced on February 18 said the accused Yusuf Chopan was entitled to statutory bail as the investigation agency could not file the charge sheet within the prescribed time period.
The federal terror probe agency further clarified that Chopan has been granted default bail by NIA Court New Delhi on February 18 and he has been sent back to Kot Bhalwal Jail Jammu under Public Safety Act by the order of DM Pulwama. (UNI)
