Like many other projects, Udhampur Stadium has also become a victim of negligence and apathy of concerned authorities. Delay in bringing its construction to completion stands in direct contrast to the claims of the government that it is serious in providing necessary wherewithal to the youth of the Sate. A stadium is generally where the youth of the region or the state would display their physical skills and feats to enliven the spectators. We are far behind in sports and athletics and our country has not been performing as we should have in the Olympics or Commonwealth Games or Asian Games. It is a matter of great concern that a country with world’s second largest population should not be able to win a gold in the Olympics. Our sportsmen/sportswomen and athletes have to be produced from villages and towns which means that facilities have to be provided at grass-root levels. From here the talent will emerge. This has to be borne in mind when we build stadia or provide other facilities to the youth. Those who are responsible for providing the infrastructure should be warned of reprisals if they are negligent of their responsibility.
