Ensure timber, saw mills obtain fire NOC: F&ES to Fire Stations

JAMMU, Mar 12: Consequent to recent fire incidents in some wood based industries in Jammu Region resulting in heavy loss of life and property, the Licensing Authority, Jammu (concerned Conservator of Forest) have issued circular making certificate from Fire and Emergency Services Department regarding installation of fire safety measures and equipment mandatory for seeking registration and renewal of licence under the said SRO for Wood Based Industry.
In pursuance of said circular, a meeting was held in the office chamber of the Director General, Fire and Emergency Services, Gandhi Nagar with the Incharges of Fire Stations falling in Jammu district to ensure Timber/Saw Mills obtain fire NOC from this Department.
All Incharge Fire stations of Jammu District were directed to issue a notice to the wood based industries to obtain fire NOC from Fire and Emergency Services Department, if not done already.
Recently a serious fire incident took place at one Saw Mill running in the ground floor at Gole Pulli, Talab Tillo, Jammu, on February 12, 2020 wherein 3 fire fighters died in the discharge of duty and a few were injured during the fire fighting operation. Earlier, there were two serious fire incidents one at M/s Robin Timber Traders, Akhnoor road, Jammu on June 11, 2019 and another at Saw Mill M/s ABC Joinery Channi Himmat Jammu, on November 30, 2019. According to an estimate, a number of Timber Depot/ Saw Mills are operating in Jammu district including Gangyal 56, Canal (Lower Muthi) 46, RS Pura 43, Bishnah 19, Roop Nagar 15, Akhnoor 15, Arnia 12, Gandhi Nagar 10 and F&ES City 5.
Further, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has introduced Dog Squad for Search and Rescue (SAR) Operations. Four Belgian Malinois pups have been purchased from Punjab Home Guard Canine Training and Breeding Institute, Bengaluru and four officials along with pups have been deputed to undergo training at Bengaluru. The canines named Charlie, Maggie, Ruby and Julie will be trained to locate victims during a building collapse/disaster. After completion of training, 2 canines each shall be operating from Fire Headquarters Batmaloo and Gandhi Nagar Jammu respectively from October 2020. The Firemen who have been deputed for training with pups from 15th March, 2020 at Bangaluru are Virender Singh, Anjum Khan, Sunil Dhar and Mandeep Singh.
