JAMMU, Apr 1: Minister of State for Home Sajjad Ahmed Kichloo today said that a total 35,794 families were dislocated in Jammu region during Kargil conflict and majority of them nearly 26,579 belonged to Jammu district.
Replying to a question of Congress member, Ravinder Sharma in the Upper House today, MoS Home said that a large number of people from Akhnoor, Nowshera, Sundebani and other parts were dislocated during the Kargil war. He disclosed that from Nowshera area of Rajouri, total 1834 families, 38 from Sunderbani, 3891 from Kathua and 3452 from Poonch were dislocated. During that period, free ration and kerosene oil was also provided to them besides cash assistance at the rate of Rs 200 per head per month which was increased to Rs 400 per head subject to maximum of Rs 1600 per family per month. Cash assistance for fodder at the rate of Rs 300 per month was also given.
These families were kept in the camps and other civil amenities like drinking water , electricity and tents etc were also provided. Moreover, 38 families comprising 182 people of village Meenka, tehsil Sunderbani were also provided relief but cash assistance was not provided to them as they continued to cultivate their land during the day and used to come in the camp at Bajabain during nights. They returned to their villages in 2004. The member however claimed that he was not satisfied with the reply of the Government. He said why deserving families were left out.
Replying to another question, the Minister said the electricity charges were billed on flat rates where meters have not been installed. The metered installations were billed on minimum charges.
