THANE, Mar 30: President of All Indian Cine Workers Association on Monday sought assistance from the Central Government to the cine workers.
In a memorandum to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Suresh Gupta said, “There is a serious and human reason behind writing this letter. Markets are closed due to lockdown across the country, our film and TV industry are also completely closed due to this.”
In this case, our association, its members, film labours and workers are standing firm and committed to your decision that we will fight this epidemic together. While this lock-down is necessary for health reasons and also beneficial for the citizens of the country, but at the same time, it is also a problem in which the daily workers and monthly earning workers are financially straining, it read.
“The Finance Minister of the country, Nirmala Sitaraman Ji has announced the economic package for the various corporate, small and big businesses, companies, MNREGA people of the country,” the memorandum further read.
Daily workers have also been taken care of in this, but it is said with great sadness that in this economic package, a huge number of daily labourers working in the film industry are completely untouched. There are lakhs of workers in the film industry who are unorganised and work on daily wages, he added.
He said, Most of these employees hardly get employment for 5 days to 15 days in a month. If we count them also in the category of daily labourers then it will not be wrong. Due to the film shooting being stopped, their employment has also stopped suddenly. Their daily or monthly wages are not such that they can live more than a week or ten days along with the family in this situation.
These are the labourers whose hard work, cooperation and dedication allow the film industry to show entertaining films, serials, advertisements etc. to the whole country as well as the world, he added.
Along with the president of All Indian Cine Workers Association, I, being a film, labourer, the artist-worker representative, Government of Maharashtra, keep in direct contact with such workers and labourers and only after getting information about their family and their economic status, I am writing you this letter with the hope that you will definitely take appropriate action in this serious matter by taking cognisance.
If the government does not cooperate with these workers as earliest as possible, then they will die of hunger, disease and the financial crisis. No major cine artist also has yet come forward to help these workers and labourers, he pointed out.
