Sanctions 1st installment of Rs 3.75 crore for each school

JAMMU, Apr 1: To improve the Nursing Education in J&K, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare today approved upgradation of three more Nursing Schools of the Union Territory into Nursing Colleges.
Official sources told Excelsior that the Health & Medical Education Department of J&K had submitted 10 proposals along with Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) to the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, for upgradation of 10 Nursing Schools into Nursing Colleges, including one at Kargil, which is now part of UT of Ladakh.
“Earlier on 6th March, 2020, the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, had conveyed the approval for upgradation of five Nursing Schools i.e. GNM Akhnoor, GNM Kulgam, GNM Pulwama, GNM Shopian and GNM Budgam into Nursing Colleges and now the Ministry has conveyed approval for upgradation of three more Nursing Schools at Udhampur, Rajouri and Reasi into Nursing Colleges,” they said.
Sources disclosed that an amount of Rs 3.75 crore per college has been sanctioned as 1st Installment for upgradation of these colleges, out of total Rs 6 crore (Non-Recurring 5.21 crore and Recurring 0.79 crore) and in each upgraded Nursing College, a batch of 60 students for BSc Nursing shall be admitted every year.
Regarding up-gradation of Nursing Schools at Kathua and Doda, they said it is under active consideration of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and soon a decision will be taken on the fate of these institutions.
“Five Nursing Colleges at Jammu, Kishtwar, Baramulla, Anantnag and Sopore have already been sanctioned and are in various stages of their establishment. A batch of 60 students of BSc Nursing at Jammu has already been admitted from this year,” they added.
Sources further informed that the inspections for affiliation by the University of Kashmir for Nursing College Baramulla and Nursing College Anantnag have already been conducted and these two colleges are expected to be made operational in the year 2020-21. Now, the Union Territory of J&K shall have 13 Nursing Colleges in various District Headquarters.
They said Government of India is very serious about improving medical and nursing education in J&K and has already taken several important steps to overcome the shortage of trained doctors and nurses. “The UT has already been sanctioned seven new Medical Colleges, out of which four have been permitted by Medical Council of India (MCI) to admit MBBS students while Government Medical College Doda is likely to get ‘Letter of Permission’ (LoP) in the session 2020-21,” they added.
Sources said that the process for establishment of remaining two newly sanctioned Medical Colleges at Udhampur and Handwara have also been initiated and once completed, this will provide a major boost to Medical Education in J&K.
