Human Rights Commission to inquire into SFI leader’s death

KOLKATA, Apr 3:
The Human Rights Commission will inquire into the death of SFI leader Sudipto Gupta, who passed away in SSKM hospital here last evening after a law violation programme.
The Commission today ordered the inquiry, report of which would be submitted within a week.
The Commission also asked the city police commissioner to inquire into the incident separately.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital during the day and assured ‘all help’ to the family members of the SFI leader.
Sudipto’s body was taken from the hospital during the day to Netaji Nagar College, his residence at Garia and the SFI office before the last rites at the Keoratala crematorium.
Former chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Left Front chairman and CPI(M) state secretary Biman Basu, Opposition Leader in the Assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra and senior CPI(M) leader Gautam Deb paid their last respects to the departed soul at the SFI office.
Sudipto (22), was among other SFI activists who were arrested yesterday after a law violation programme at the Rani Rashmoni Avenue demanding students’ union polls cancelled by theSstate Government.
He had received injuries when he was being brought to the Presidency jail in a bus along with other SFI activists and died in the hospital later.
Police had maintained that Gupta, leaning on the footboard of the bus, was hit by a lamppost while he was being brought to the jail.
However, SFI had alleged that Sudipto was tortured by police in the bus.
The super of SSKM hospital had said, ‘There were injuries on the head of Sudipto and he was admitted in the ICCU  immediately.’
The Left Front had demanded a judicial inquiry into the death of the SFI leader.
The SFI has called for a students’ strike tomorrow in protest against the incident, while the Left Front has also called for a 12-hour bandh tomorrow in three different areas of the city– Dhakuria, Tollugunj and Garia. (UNI)
