Concern over encroachment of cremation ground

JAMMU, Apr 3: All State Kashmiri Pandit Conference (ASKPC) in a meeting held under the chairmanship of its president H L Chatta expressed grave concern over the encroachment of cremation ground of Hindus at Lar Ganderbal in Kashmir valley by anti social elements.
The meeting said that earlier also this cremation ground was grabbed by the anti social elements and later the community got it restored to the concerned Committee. It said the Cremation Ground has been fenced by these miscreants with the help of Revenue authorities. The meeting accused the State Government of its total failure in safeguarding the religious places of Pandits in Valley. It said that the grabbing of religious places and changing the Hindu names of villages and hill locks is being done under a conspiracy.
Meanwhile, president Sanatan Dharam Sabha Handwara Bushan Lal Pandita has questioned the Government statement regarding the number of temples and shrines in Kupwara district of Kashmir valley.
In a statement here today he termed the Government statement totally baseless that 213.15 kanals of land belong to temples and shrines in Kupwara is totally baseless. He said as per records there were 57 temples and 12 Asthapans in Kupwara district up to 1990 and only four asthapans including Mata Khirbhawani Tikker, Red Nag Lal Pora, Sadhu Ganga Kandi and Baderkali Wadipora have about 702 kanals of land.
He said that not only the anti social elements but the Government at various places has itself made encroachment of Hindus shrines land. He said that recently Government bid to construct a school over the temple Kharman Nand Ram Handwara was stopped by timely intervention of Sabha.
