JAMMU, Apr 4: The gouging of eyes of an Army jawan today figured in the Legislative Assembly with National Conference MLA demanding detailed investigation into the incident and proper medicare for the injured. The Government, while ruling out militancy angle, said that investigation was already going on.
“It was a barbaric act — it should be probed thoroughly and culprits should be punished,” NC MLA, R S Sharma said, adding that the truth should be brought before the people. He also demanded free treatment for the jawan.
Sensing the member’s mood, Speaker Mubarak Gul directed the Government to make a statement on the issue and asked the Government to provide medical aid to the jawan.
Later, making statement, Law Minister Mir Saifullah on behalf of the Home Minister, said the jawan’s leave had ended and he had left home on April 1 to join duty.
“The jawan boarded a bus from Nowshera (Rajouri) to Jammu and reported at the transit camp,” Saifullah said, adding “after that he was found injured in a nullah (in Choki Chora)…Locals saw him and he was rushed to the hospital”. He further said that both his eyes have been badly gouged out, adding “a case has been registered…2-3 persons are involved for his torture…It is being investigated”.
“I got a call when I was in the Assembly…I rushed to the hospital and tried to speak to him but he was unconscious,” Minister of State for Home, Sajjad Ahmed Kitchloo told reporters, adding “to me, it does not appear to be a case of militancy related incident…It appears to be a case of rivalry.
The Station House Officer (SHO) and SSP have been asked to conduct probe and in a day or two things will be clear, the MoS Home said.
