LEH, Apr 21: A snow leopard attacked and killed 37 sheep and pashmina goats at Yourgo village in Durbuk block when the leopard entered the livestock shed of Tsering Dorjay at the village during last night.
The Executive Councillor for Wildlife Konchok Stanzin immediately sent a wildlife team to Yourgo village to get hold of the snow leopard.
“The snow leopard after being trapped will be released back into the wild after a few days.” said EC Konchok.
He expressed grief over the huge loss of livestock which is the only means of sustenance for the nomad family and directed Wildlife Warden Leh to assess the livestock loss for giving timely compensation to them.
He also instructed Wildlife Warden Leh to provide corral pen to the family in protecting remaining livestock.
EC Konchok also directed DSHO, Leh Dr. Tundup Namgyal to sanction a unit of sheep/goat to the affected family to recover the loss.
Revenue Department Durbuk was also directed to assess the livestock loss.
It is pertinent to mention that it is the fourth wildlife attack on livestock within a period of month taking the livestock kills up to 170 in the district including killing of 52 pashmina goat kids in a wolf attack reported in the same village (Yourgo) on March 30, 2020.
