NEW DELHI, Apr 5: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today described the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme as a test of UPA’s implementation capacity, asserting that the government could not afford to fail.
“This is a programme in which the implementation capacity of our government will be tested. We cannot afford to fail,” the Prime Minister said in his remarks at a meeting held to review phase one of the DBT scheme which was launched in 43 districts on January one.
He approved extension of the scheme to 78 more districts today taking the total number of districts to be covered under the scheme to 121.
With this one fifth of the country will be covered under the scheme.
Stressing the need to show that the government could deliver results and benefits, the Prime Minister described the DBT as an initiative which has the potential of transforming the way in which government benefits are delivered to people. (UNI)
