JAMMU, Apr 27: Stating that misuse of data services by anti-national elements has potential to scale up violent activities and disturb public order, the Department of Home, J&K Government, today ordered the continuance of 2G mobile data services only till May 11 in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
According to an order in this regard, issued today by Principal Secretary, Home Department, Shaleen Kabra, the internet speed on mobile data services shall be restricted to 2G only. While the Postpaid SIM card holders shall continue to be provided access to the internet, these services shall not be made available on prepaid SIM cards, unless verified as per the norms applicable for postpaid connections. Fixed line internet connectivity shall continue to be made available with Mac-binding.
These directions shall remain in force till May 11, 2020, unless modified earlier, says the order.
Giving reasons for restricting the internet speed in view of the overall security scenario in J&K Union Territory, the Home Ministry order says that there has been a spurt in terrorist violence with launch of new terror outfits and the field agencies have well founded apprehensions of enhanced efforts by Pakistan for recruitment in the terrorist ranks as well as infiltration attempts, which heavily depend on high speed internet.
