SRINAGAR, May 12: In a major spike in Coronavirus positive cases, 44 persons including five minors and a 92-year-old man tested positive for COVID-19 today taking the Jammu and Kashmir tally to 934 with 844 in Kashmir.
Medical Superintendent SKIMS Dr Farooq Jan, told Excelsior that 40 people tested positive at the tertiary care’s viral diagnostic lab in last 24 hours from Kashmir.
Dr Saleem Khan, Nodal Officer said at CD Hospital Srinagar’s Microbiology Lab, 826 samples were processed and seven among them tested positive.
Among the fresh cases in Kashmir, 28 are from Kulgam, 10 from Kupwara, five from Anantnag and one from Shopian district.
Ten persons who tested positive from Kupwara are from Gonipora Handwara and include a 3-year-old and 6-year-old boys, 3 men aged 26, 30 and 58 years besides five women aged 18, 20, 24, 26 and 45 years.
One case from Shopian includes 41-year-old man from Pandshan while one of the Anantnag cases who tested positive at SKIMS is a 40-year-old woman from Bijbehara Anantnag.
Twenty eight persons from Kulgam who tested positive last night at SKIMS include a 3 year old and 12-year-old girl from Khan Mohalla, 7-year-old boy from K B Pora Avil besides a 92-year-old man from Chattabal. All of them have history of travel to New Delhi, Uttarakhand, Vijaypur and Bengaluru.
The case which were confirmed at CD lab include 19-year-old woman from Sadora Kokernag, 18-year-old and 40-year-old women besides 40-year-old man from Kokernag.
With these cases, Srinagar has 136 cases including 51 active followed by Bandipora with 134 cases including 26 active, Anantnag has 127 cases including 114 active, Baramulla has 109 cases with 49 active, Shopian has 104 cases with 44 active, Kupwara has 83 cases with 38 active, Budgam has 46 cases with 32 active, Kulgam has 69 cases with 63 active, Ganderbal has 23 cases with 9 active and Pulwama has 13 cases with 9 active.
There are 469 are active cases in Jammu and Kashmir and 455 people have recovered while 10 have died.
Authorities said that till date 98083 travellers and persons in contact with suspected cases have been enlisted for surveillance which included 24285 persons in home quarantine including facilities operated by government, 153 in Hospital Quarantine, 469 in hospital isolation and 10830 under home surveillance. Besides, 62336 persons have completed their surveillance period.
Meanwhile, 169 students who were stranded and evacuated from Bangladesh arrived in Srinagar today.
Their evacuation and arrival in Srinagar followed sustained efforts of Government of India and the J&K Government to bring them home.
This was the second flight bringing stranded J&K students back from Bangladesh. Most of these students belonged to different districts of Kashmir division whilst some belonged to Doda, Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu region.
Upon their arrival in Srinagar all these students were screened and their samples were taken to test for COVID-19.
Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary visited several of these centres and interacted with the arriving students. He assured them of provision of all their needs and requirements throughout their quarantine period.
