SRINAGAR: Militants escaped from a cordoned off area after a brief exchange of fire with security forces in south Kashmir district of Kulgam on Thursday, official sources said.
However, security forces in nearby areas have been alerted to nab the militants, they said.
A police spokesman said this morning that on a tip-off about the presence of militant, troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at Yamrach in Kulgam in the wee hours.
However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened fire. Security forces also retaliated ensuing in an encounter, he said.
Official sources said that firing stopped after some time. Security forces further tightened the cordon in the area and this morning when the house to house search was launched no militant was found.
Militants had escaped under the cover of darkness, sources said adding security forces in nearby areas were alerted to nab the militants. (AGENCIES)
