Woman dies in Kupwara, family alleges negligence

SRINAGAR, June 27: Death of a lady after she delivered a baby at Public Health Centre (PHC), Machil today sparked protest as the people alleged “negligence” on part of the doctors.
However, health officials in the district refute the claims, saying that the woman was declared brought death after she was referred from PHC Machil to SDH, Kupwara.
The woman has been identified as Parveena, wife of Akhtar Ali Khan of Depal Machil area of Kupwara district.
The lady, after developing labour pain was admitted at PHC Machil, where she gave birth to a baby after undergoing normal delivery. While the condition of the baby is said to be good, however, the condition of the woman deteriorated.
In that condition, the lady was immediately shifted to Kupwara hospital where he died due to the postpartum bleeding or postpartum haemorrhage (PPH).
In-Charge Block Medical Officer (BMO), Kupwara Dr Zaffer Iqbal told Excelsior that the lady had delivered a baby at 7:30 in the morning and by 11:30 she reached Kupwara after her condition deteriorated.
“There was no delay, as is being alleged and my doctors, which included a consultant, attended to the lady at 11:32, we checked the pulse, there was none. We did an ECG, it was flat. She was brought death and the cause of death being PPH,” he said.
Shortly after the death of the woman, the family members staged a protest against hospital authorities. The family members alleged that the woman died due to the negligence of doctors.
On the allegation of a junior doctor being present at that time at the hospital, the CMO said that the he had a consultant present at the hospital who attended to her.
It is, however, being alleged that the senior gynaecologist was relieved by the CMO Kupwara from the hospital after she raised her voice against the non-availability of PPE kits in the hospital.
The allegations were altogether refuted by the health officials in the district, saying that there was no negligence of part of the doctors while attending to the patient.
