LEH, June 30: Remem-bering the youngest Mahavir Chakra (MVC) recipient Lt Col Chhewang Rinchen on his 23rd death anniversary, his family members, relative and well wishers gathered at his memorial park today to pay tribute to Col Chhewang Rinchen.
They offered traditional scarf “Khataks” and flowers at his memorial Stupa. Due to Corona virus pandemic, his 23rd death anniversary observed with few gathering which used to be organized by Ladakh Scouts Regimental Centre (LSRC) at the large scale.
Pertinent to mention here, Lt Col Chhewang Rinchen MVC Bar, SM hailed from Sumoor village in Nubra. While still in his teens, he raised volunteers for Nubra Guard which successfully pushed back the tribal invaders from Pakistan in 1948. For this remarkable feat, he was awarded the MVC. He thus became the youngest recipient of this prestigious award. He was awarded Sena Medal for his services during the Sino-India war of 1962.
He was awarded the MVC the second time in the Indo-Pak war in 1971, when the Indian forces under his command liberated Turtuk region in Nubra valley from Pakistan. A born soldier Lt Col Chhewang Rinchen personified the qualities of bravery, fortitudes, dedicated and sincerity in their highest degrees.
