Once known as “St. John’s Dog”, Labrador retreviers is one of the most important breed which is gaining its popularity in jammu region. The breed originated on the island of Newfoundland – “Canada”. The breed was earlier bred to help local fisherman in hauling nets, fetching ropes, retrieving fishes that had escaped the nets and as well as to be a family dog. Labrador are prized as sporting and waterfowl hunting dogs.
Description: Labrador are very active, strongly build dogs with good bones. Its coat should be short and dense, but not wiry. The coat is water resistance so the dog does not get cold when taking to water in winters. The head should be broad. The lining around the eyes should be black. The ears should hang close to the head. Tail of the Labrador is broad at the base and gradually tappers as it approaches the tip. Acceptable colours are black, yellow and chocolate. Height of an adult Labrador may vary from 22.5-24.5 inches and Weight varies from 30-36 kgs. Litter size can vary from 5-10 puppies with the average life span of Labrador is 12-14 years.
Eating habbits:
Labrador have huge appetite and loves to eat and become obese (above 45 kgs) very quickly if overfed. Give your lab plenty of exercise of atleast 30 to 60 min a day to avoid obesity.
Training:
Labra are typically easy to train. Training lessons should be short and punishment during training session should be avoided, instead teach your dog in polite manner without hurting or frightening him. Always make sure that the behavior you like should be rewarded with food or a good belly rubs.
Temperament:
Labrador have a reputation as a very even-termpered breed and an excellent family dog. This breed of dogs loves to play with children of all age. Navy, military forces and police use them as detection dog to track down terrorist, smugglers, thieves.
Labrador pups care:
Visit your veterinarian within two days of brining your puppy home. Your puppy will need regular deworming and vaccination against diseases like parvo virus infection, rabies, hepatitis, leptospirosis, para influenza and corona virus infection. Talk to your vet for specific recommendations regarding feeding of your pet but generally the best puppy foods be a good source of protein, calcium and calories. Grooming should be done once in a week using a rounded bristle dog brush. Labrador have sensitive skin and frequent bathing can irritate it leading to certain skin problemns. Giving bath once or twice in a month to your dog is adviced.
