A life saving campaign

A life saving campaign

Sir,
This is with reference to news item “VCT for providing anti-rabies vaccine to needy” DE July 8. Viklang Chhatra Trust, is the pioneer NGO providing free Jaipur foot, making the patients cataract free and doing other humanitarian activities in our State since decades. This is the oldest NGO of J&K doing such work and that too without any monetary help from Government.

Now the trust has started a new anti-rabies Program for providing information and free treatment for dog bites. The Trust has spent more than twenty thousand rupees on more than ninety patients to save them from rabies in less than five weeks in Sub-District Hospital Akhnoor. This shows that the number of dog bite patients in Jammu region is also increasing day by day and day is not far when we will be having similar problem as is being faced by people in Srinagar.

The step taken by the trust shows humanitarian approach of the people running the trust and their foresightedness should be applauded by people of Jammu region. The Government should also do something about sterilizatio of dogs in Jammu region. Other NGOs in Jammu region should also start a campaign against rabies in Jammu as rabies is a life threatening disease and past certain point it is 100% fatal. India has reported as having the highest rate of human rabies in the world. There are an estimated 55000 human deaths annually from rabies worldwide out of which almost 20,000 people are from India.

Yours etc…
