A novel scheme

Sir,
IIT Kharagpur deserves appreciation for launching the ‘Learn-Earn-Return Fund’ scheme from this new academic session to raise funds to help students to learn without burden and shape their career to earn and give back to their alma mater. There is no doubt that higher education in India is expensive with the result many meritorious students belonging to econonomically backward families who succeed in cracking prestigious IITJEE find it difficult to pay their fee to pursue their courses. The Ministry of Human Resources Development has already slashed the budgetary allocations and enhanced the annual fee for the undergraduate courses in IITs from Rs 90000 to Rs 2 lakhs from the upcoming session and asked the IITs to raise funds on their own.The new innovative scheme launched by the IIT Kharagpur will go a long way in helping the economically backward and meritorious students to pursue their courses.Under this scheme, the IIT Kharagpur will offer scholorships or fee waiver to the students in a graded manner based on their merit and economic background and the students will be required to take an Honours Pledge to give a minimum of Rs 10000 per annum after they get jobs.Full fee waver will be offered to the students with exceptional academic record. This scheme will also help the alumini in establishing close bond with their almamaters.Sound financial position is imperative for any university for providing education of global standard. Therefore,it is the duty of every alumunus  to  return back and contribute at least 1 percent of their annual income to their almamaters after they get jobs. The institutions,on there part, should organise Alumini Meets to engage the alumini in important events and develop sense of belongingness in them. The alumini of universities in many countries such as USA, UK etc.contribute a lot to their almamaters to enable them to have good academic and infrastructural facilities and it is time that we also developed this useful culture in our country and support the education of poor and meritorious students as also offer international standard  facilities in our  institutions of higher learning.IIT Kharagpur is already in the news as two of its students have been awarded President of India gold medals during its annual convocation for securing the highest CGPA score of 9.75.This premier institution deserves all appreciation for such revolutionary schemes and singular achievements.
Yours etc….
