JAMMU, Jan 16: Son of the soil, Dr Pawan Puneet Malhotra brought laurels to the Jammu and Kashmir when ‘American Academy of Ophthalmology’ (AAO) acknowledged a surgical technique by his name “Malhotra’s Indigenous SFIOL technique”.
Dr Pawan Puneet Malhotra son of Prof Adarsh Malhotra, a Retina surgeon of international repute, innovated a complex eye surgery for the cases where lens could not be placed earlier and patients had to live with old thick glasses.
By his technique, he not only made it cost effective but also very easy to learn, thus bringing a ray of hope for all visually debilitated patients. By certain modifications, he obviated the need of any sutures, forceps, glue, specially trained assistant or high end microscope as earlier required for this surgery.
Last year, Dr Malhotra was invited by Emirates Society of Ophthalmology for an instruction course on such lens fixation in Dubai and there after presented his work for the same at Euretina conference in Amsterdam in September too. He has more than 20,000 eye surgeries to his credit by now and even has performed more than 200 cases with his newer technique over the last 4 years.
After MBBS from GMC Jammu, Dr Malhotra did his MS from prestigious PGI Chandigarh and thereafter pursued surgical retina training for 5 years in SNC Chitrakoot (Madhya Pardesh) and is presently a Senior Retina surgeon in Sohana hospital, a Tertiray care Eye Trust Hospital in Mohali (Punjab) for last 7 years, serving patients from different strata of the society with equal care and compassion.
