Abdullah’s anniversary missing from holiday list

SRINAGAR, Dec 29: Despite a letter written by the Council of Ministers of the Omar Abdullah led Government, the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, former Chief Minister and founder of the National Conference, has been excluded from Jammu and Kashmir’s public holiday list for 2025.

According to a notification issued by the Government, the Union Territory will observe 28 public holidays in 2025. However, Abdullah’s birth anniversary on December 5 didn’t figure in the list of holidays. This is despite repeated assurances from the Omar Abdullah-led Government about reinstating the NC founder’s birth anniversary and other holidays.
The Lieutenant Governor’s administration had initially dropped several public holiday calendars in 2020. The exclusion has continued for several years, even though Omar Abdullah, after being sworn in as Chief Minister nearly two months ago, pledged to restore them.
His Government, which holds 42 seats in the 90-member Assembly, has faced criticism for failing to fulfil this promise so far.
In addition to the 28 general holidays, the 2025 calendar includes four provincial holidays for the Kashmir region, three for Jammu, eight local holidays, and four restricted holidays.
Advisor to Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani earlier this month told reporters here that the Ccouncil of Ministers had sent a proposal with regard to the holiday on December 5. “Hopefully, the holiday will be observed on this day again next year,” he had said.
