Abhinav Theatre in Jammu was originally established to showcase the city’s art, culture, and heritage as well as provide a platform for local artists. However, it has faced multiple closures in the name of repairs, sometimes for years together. The most recent is the repair work for the leaking roof of Jammu’s elite cultural centre, which was expected to be completed by January of this year. The work has yet to begin and has negatively impacted Jammu’s art and cultural activities. This theatre is the only one available at reasonable rates and has all the necessary facilities for both major and minor cultural events. The PWD has expressed concerns that there may not be a permanent solution for the leaks, but a new report is being prepared, and several options are under consideration. The problem of water leakage from the roof of Abhinav Theatre has been persisting for over a decade now, and despite several attempts to fix it, the issue has not been resolved. Several options have been considered, but none of them has been satisfactory as they only provide a temporary solution. The Public Works Department is now preparing a new report as the auditorium has no pillar and no beam in its roof, and the already existing roof has become too weak due to the continuous leakage, and as such, any untoward incident can occur. Efforts are on to provide a lasting solution to the problem, and a waterproofing company has been consulted to suggest the appropriate material for fixing the leaks. As per the assigned engineering wing, the repair work is estimated to cost seventy-five lakhs.
It is important to note that theatres play a vital role in promoting arts and culture. They provide a platform for artists to showcase their talent and express themselves creatively through plays, musicals, dance performances, and other artistic forms. Theatres also serve as a medium for cultural exchange, where people from diverse backgrounds can come together to appreciate and learn about different cultures. In addition, theatres provide opportunities for artists to collaborate and develop new works, which helps push the boundaries of creativity and innovation. They also serve as educational resources, providing students with access to live performances and educational programmes that enrich their understanding and appreciation of arts and culture. Theatres also have a significant economic impact, creating jobs and contributing to the local economy through tourism, ticket sales, and other revenue-generating activities. Overall, Abhinav Theatre is essential for promoting arts and culture, providing opportunities for artistic expression and cultural exchange, fostering creativity and innovation, and contributing to the economic and social well-being of Jammu, but the J&K Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages has consistently failed to provide a solution or an alternative. This theatre has been neglected, and many of the stone scriptures on its premises are in disrepair, with some broken and in need of cleaning. The theatre was once a vibrant hub of cultural activity, with local talents and professional groups from all over the country participating in regular productions of theatre, dance, and music. Abhinav Theatre had been closed in the past for many years under the pretext of renovation, with promises of modernization and improved facilities for artists. Despite assurances of speedy renovation work, the theatre remains either closed or a leaking roof makes it unusable. All dilly-dallying tactics should be abandoned, and an ample budget should be made available for a long-lasting solution rather than time-gap arrangements. If repairs are not possible, immediate alternative theatre plan should be mooted. It is also important to ensure that the repair work is done using high-quality materials and by skilled workers to maintain the theatre’s authenticity. Furthermore, it is crucial to ensure that the renovation work is completed within a reasonable time frame so that the theatre can resume its regular cultural activities and showcase local talents.
