JAMMU, Aug 8: Demanding Hostel facilities for the students under various categories, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today held a protest demonstration at Jammu University Campus.
Protesting under the leadership of Sunil Singh Roudhan, President of ABVP’s Jammu University unit, they were demanding adequate hostel accommodations for students belonging to Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), Reserved Backward Area (RBA), Scheduled Castes (ALC), and Women Underprivileged (WUP) categories. They were also pressing for reopening of the applications for the hostels and adjustment of all the needy students.
The protesting students claimed that they had submitted a memorandum in January month to the Vice Chancellor, Provost Hostels, and Dean of Student Welfare (DSW) addressing the pressing need for hostels and open adjustments for students falling under these categories.
Despite the passage of nearly eight months, the demands outlined in the memorandum have not been fulfilled, prompting ABVP to come on road, they said.
The protesting ABVP activists and students assembled outside the office of Provost Hostels and held demonstration for approximately one and a half hour. Later, the protest was shifted to the office of Dean Students Welfare office, where it continued for about two hours.
The protest was suspended after the JU administration arranged a meeting with ABVP representatives and students, during which an assurance was given for the resolution of the issue within the next two days.
ABVP activists, who participated in the protest, included Akarshit Sharma, Rahul Singh, Aryan Gupta, Sanjeev, Sahil Choudhary and others.
