ACB nabs Patwari taking graft

JAMMU, Oct 21: The J&K Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a Revenue official red-handed while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50000.

Ruman Qayoom, Patwari Halqa Mujgund, was allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh in connection with the registration of land measuring two kanals and the issuance of revenue extracts.
According to an ACB official, the complainant had purchased a land and was asked by Qayoom to pay Rs 1 lakh as bribe for the registration stamp duty.
After negotiations, he said, the bribe was settled at Rs 50000 as the first instalment, with the remaining Rs 50000 to be paid after the completion of the task.
Unwilling to comply, the complainant filed a written complaint with the ACB, seeking legal action against the accused, he said.
The ACB official further said that upon receiving the complaint, the ACB conducted discreet verification, confirming the demand.
Accordingly, he said, a case FIR number 22/2024 under Section 7 of the Prevention of the Corruption Act 1988 was registered and investigation initiated.
Followed by this, he said, a trap was laid, which successfully caught Ruman Qayoom red-handed while accepting Rs 50000 from the complainant as bribe.
After completion of the necessary formalities, the accused was taken into custody, he said, adding that further investigation into the case is underway.
