Accession Day observed at Kathua, Udhampur

KATHUA, Oct 27: Functions were also held today at various places in connection with observance of Accession Day (Villay Divas).
A grand function was organized by senior citizens, traders, educationists and common masses of Kathua at Main Chowk here, today to celebrate the Accession Day.
The Chowk was fully decorated and illuminated by the people who paid rich tributes to Maharaja Hari Singh and Brig. Rajinder Singh on the occasion. They said the Maharja being a farsighted ruler had taken a right decision by acceding with world’s largest democracy after rejecting two nation theory of Jinnah though he was under constant pressure within either to accede to Pakistan or remain independent.
The speakers while terming Villay Divas said that people celebrate this as Vijay Divas also as a new chapter started in the history of J&K from this day.
They demanded that the Day be celebrated at Government level also and official functions should be organized besides the Day be declared as a national festival and holiday. The function was chaired by Kulbir Singh a prominent trader.
Another function was held at Udhampur which was organized by local unit of BJP in which senior party leader, Pawan Khajuria and other leaders participated.
Addressing the gathering Mr Khajuria threw light on the role of Maharaja whom he termed a great visionary. He said Maharaja took a historic decision by acceding to India and gave J&K honour of becoming crown of India. He also demanded that the day be declared a holiday and all the government offices and civil secretariat be illuminated in the State.
The gathering also paid flower tributes to Maharaja and Brig Rajinder Singh and said that the nation can’t forget their contribution.
