Acting CJ inaugurates legal aid clinic

JAMMU, May 29: A Free Legal Aid Clinic was inaugurated by Acting Chief Justice, Virender Singh along with Justice, J P Singh and Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir in presence of Director General of Prison, Naveen Agarwal at Central Jail Kot Bhalwal here today.
Registrar General, J R Kotwal, Secretary, State Legal Services Authority, Abdul Rashid Malik, Principal and District Session Judge, Jang Bahadur Singh, SSP Jail, Rajni Sehgal besides President of Bar Association, B S Slathia, lawyers and officers of police and concerning departments were present on the occasion.
Chief Justice described road map of state legal authority and the schemes of free and competent legal services to the prisoners.
He said services of the Para-Legal Volunteers, Legal Aid Clubs, Legal Aid Clinics and NGOs will also be utilized in this regard. There are 13 jails in the state including 2 central jails, 8 district jails and 3 sub jails.
He said SLSA is making an endeavour to reach out to the under trials/convicts through Para-Legal Volunteers and in this regard, district legal services authorities are visiting the jails to identify educated prisoners serving long term sentences as Para-Legals to create awareness amongst the prisoners about their right to live with human dignity and to enjoy all the constitutional and legal rights.
