Activist arrested for protesting against Sisi released on bail

CAIRO, July 9:  A political activist arrested on charges of inciting protest against Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi over fuel price hike, was released by prosecutors on a 1,000 Egyptian pounds (about USD 140) bail, a media report said.
Mohamed Nassar, a member of April 6 Youth Movement, was arrested at Talaat Harb Square in downtown Cairo for holding a banner that read “You promised you will not remove subsidy, you are a liar President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.”
He was accused of inciting protest against the oil price hike by holding the banner, insulting Sisi, mobilisation and violating the protest law.
Nassar, however, had denied all charges saying that he was standing alone, contradicting the allegation of mobilisation, al-Shorouk newspaper reported.
Egypt passed a protest law in November that imposes stringent conditions on protests and allow police unchecked power to deny permission to any demonstration, defined as a gathering of 10 persons.
Nassar used the fact that he was standing alone to plead innocent. (PTI)
