Activists, officers meet to discuss climate change, global warming

Srinagar, Nov 16: Several stakeholders gathered today at Pampore to discuss climate change and global warming which is a serious threat presently faced by the people all around the world.
The stakeholders which included forest officers, civilian administration, police officers, environmental activists and teachers brainstormed on the importance of trees and forests.
The event was jointly organised by the Department of Social Forestry in association with Birla Open Minds International School Pampore.
Regional Director Social Forestry department Kashmir Mehraj-ud-din Malik urged the school teachers and other stakeholders to understand the importance of trees as they serve as the kidneys of earth.
Dr Raja Muzaffar, social activist and writer in his address said that world leaders seem to be serious now on climate change and afforestation as most of the countries have resolved during COP 26 conference to halt deforestation and land degradation by 2030.
Research Scholar at Harvard Medical School Dr Shabir Hassan said that by sending emails or WhatsApp messages we are involved in carbon emissions.
He said that global warming was a great threat to earth and the only way to counter this is to go for massive plantation drives.
Chairman Nigeen Lake Conservation Organisation Manzoor Wangnoo spoke about Mission Ehsas and cleaning of Gilsar Khushal Sar lakes in Srinagar old city.
The OSD to Chief Secretary Waseem Farooq, General Secretary BML Trust G M Lone, Sheikh Gayasudin Campus Director Birla School also spoke on the occasion.  At the end of the event, the participants undertook a plantation drive on the school campus by planting more than two dozen deodar plants on the campus.
