JAMMU, Mar 9: Impressive presentation of play in Hindustani ‘Adalat Mein Gandhi’, by Yamini Cultural Society marked the ongoing annual drama festival being organized by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, at auditorium of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, here today.
Written by Rajneesh Gupta and directed by J R Sagar, the play is about troubled relationship of Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi (J R Sagar) and Kasturba Gandhi (Sapna Soni) with their eldest son Harilal Karamchand Gandhi (Deepak Sharma).
The plot revolves around the father and son, who followed their dreams in opposite directions. Harilal wanted to study abroad and become a barrister like his father, while Gandhi hoped that his son would join him and fight for his ideals and national cause.
His father’s predilection for unshakable principles, devastated Hari, who married early and sired five kids from his wife Gulab. After suffering financial crises, he turns to alcohol, converts to Islam, and re-converts. The play in nutshell is story of a man who lived under larger than life aura of his father, could not discover his identity and died in poverty.
Today’s performance due to impressive acting by all the three actors, wherein they imbued characters psycho-social, personalities was appreciated by audience who maintained pin drop silence only to break into applause and the end of the performance.
J R Sagar was successful in bestowing the dignity and maturity to character of Mahatma along with portraying his touching and humane side. The torment of Kasturba, as a mother torn between her husband and son, was brought out with naturalness and ease by Sapna Soni.
Debutant Deepak Sharma, as the son who could never express immense love for father and always tried to come up to his father’s expectations, also gave a noticeable performance.
Set design by Jag Pal Singh though simplistic had discernible touches of a fine artist. Background music was by Sunil Sharma and light by Jairam.
Tomorrow Dogri translation of Vijay Tendulkar’s ‘Sakharam Binder’, directed by Ashish Sharma, will be presented by Natya Karmi.
