The eyebrows play an important role in determining the look of both the eyes and the face. In fact, they frame the eyes, so keeping them well groomed is as important as eye make-up. Keep the shape as natural as possible. Avoid high, thin arched eyebrows, unless you want that perpetually surprised look!
The current trend in eyebrows is the natural looking, thicker eyebrows. The classic curved eyebrows are also popular. For a young teenager, the eyebrows should be natural, without too much shaping or very high arches. If the arches are rounded, it helps to bring balance to sharp features and an angular face shape. For a mature woman, the outer corner of the brows may be lifted, i.e. the end of the brows should curve slightly upwards. It gives a lift to the face too.
The eyebrows should be shaped according to the facial shape:
Oval Face: This is the ideal face shape, as oval faces are perfectly balanced. So, the effort should be to follow the natural brow shape. The end of the brow should curve downwards in the direction of the lower part of the ear.
Round Face: For round faces, the brows should be arched and angular. The peak or angle should be more towards the end of the brow, and not at the centre. The ends of the brows should slope in the direction towards the top of the ear.
Heart Shaped Face: The brows should be more rounded, without an angle; the curve should be slight and gentle. It should help to soften the face shape. The ends of the brows should slope in the direction of the middle part of the ear.
Long Face: The brows should not curve. In fact, they should be straighter and flat. Any curve and angle which is high will make the face look longer. The end of the brows should slope in the direction of the tip of the ear (extreme top part of ear). The slope should be very gradual.
Square Face: In a square face, the jawline is square. The effort should be to reduce the squareness of the jawline. The eyebrow arch should be high and the angle should be sharper. The peak or place where the angle forms should be directly above the square part of the jawline. The end of the brows should slope towards the direction of the middle of the ear.
To determine the shape of the brows, hold a pencil straight against the side of your nose, so that it goes upward in a line above the inner corner of your eye. This is where the brow should begin. Then hold it diagonally from the base of the nose towards the corner of the eyes. The brow should end above this point. The brow should be shaped in the form of a gently arch.
You will need tweezer, magnifying mirror, astringent lotion and small eyebrow brush. First remove stray hairs with a tweezer. Pluck one hair at a time, in the direction in which it grows. Do not pluck from above the brows….only from below the brows. After every few hairs that you pluck, stop and check the shape. Make sure you do not over pluck, because you would then have to wait for them to grow back. Keep combing the brows into shape, to check if you are keeping to the shape you want. For sparse eyebrows, just pluck stray hairs and fill in with an eyebrow pencil. To redefine brows, use a sharp eyebrow pencil. First brush the brows into shape and then make short feathery strokes. Avoid harsh black lines. Follow the direction of hair growth. Brush them again afterwards.
For sensitive skin, apply ice first. Avoid plucking too much from the ends. Start from the middle and go towards the end. Again, start from the middle and go towards the inner corner of the eyes. The brows should extend beyond the corner of the eyes. Apply an astringent or skin tonic before and after plucking the brows.
