The Defence Minister has given accent to a proposal for the establishment of four additional units of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in the UTs of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The sanctioned plan encompasses the formation of “one amalgamated (comprising both male and female) Army battalion each” in Udhampur and Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir and Kargil in Ladakh. Additionally, an air squadron is slated for establishment in Udhampur. In consequence, the augmentation will witness a substantial surge of 46.1 per cent in the strength of the NCC in J&K and Ladakh. Currently, the Directorate boasts two group headquarters encompassing a total of 10 NCC units, spanning all three geographical regions. The NCC plays a vital role in shaping responsible citizens and empowering youth. It instils discipline, leadership and national pride through character-building activities while preparing them for emergencies with disaster management training. The NCC promotes national unity through diverse interactions and cultural exchange programmes and even offers a path to the armed forces for inspired individuals. For youth, NCC unlocks personality development, educational advantages and lifelong friendships. With exposure to new cultures, physical fitness training and adventure activities, it broadens horizons and equips young minds for success in any field. It’s a win-win for both the UTs and their youth, building a stronger, more unified nation.
Recent years have borne witness to an unparalleled surge in the enthusiasm of J&K and Ladakh youth to enlist in the armed forces, particularly during specialised recruitment campaigns in these regions. The recent intent to establish additional NCC units assumes paramount significance in the context of nurturing and equipping the youth for seamless entry into the armed forces. This transformative initiative is not confined solely to the army, as an NCC Air Force Squadron stationed in Udhampur augments the aspirations of the youth, providing tangible wings to their dreams. The comprehensive character-building, rigorous discipline and holistic grooming that the youth undergo under the aegis of NCC herald a monumental epoch for the UTs of J&K and Ladakh.
