JAMMU, Dec 26: The first counseling centre in the Jammu Region under Suqoon Project at Calliope College of Education, Akhnoor was inaugurated by S. M. Sahai, Additional Director General of Police, J&K (Armed).
Suqoon is a flagship project of The Inner Call, Forum for Evolution, Development and Awareness, which was launched in November, 2013 by the then Union Health and Family Welfare Minister. Under the Suqoon project mental health services, individual case work, group counseling and psycho-educational sessions are being conducted across the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sahai said that mental health is the essential component of overall health of a person and that is the reason that mental health care activities are now in focus. He said that the Police Department is also an important stakeholder in promoting mental health in the State through its drug de-addiction centres and described the role of non-state agencies as paramount in the area of mental heatlh as there is a large gap between needs and services available.
While commissioning the facility to the public, CEO, The Inner Call, Affan Yesvi said that Inner Call endeavours to contribute towards establishing a society where individuals are not merely free from physical diseases but are also mentally capable to deal with the various challenges that life poses.
He described the counseling centre at Calliope College of Education as a new beginning for students, parents and staff members for availing counseling and guidance services whenever required. On the occasion, he appealed the masses not to hesitate in approaching the facility for professional help and fight the stigma associated with mental health problems. He also informed in detail the contribution of The Inner Call during the post-flood period in terms of material as well as counseling assistance to the victims by setting up counseling points in all the effected districts.
