Advanced laparoscopic colon cancer surgery in GMC

JAMMU, Sept 16: Major laparoscopic colonic (large intestine) cancer surgery was performed in GMC, Jammu in Surgical Unit Two headed by Professor of Surgery and senior laparoscopic surgeon Dr Tariq Pervez Azad.
The surgery was performed by Dr Sandeep Bhat (Gastointestinal cancer surgeon) and team comprising of Dr Subash Abrol (senior surgeon), Dr Vivek (Registrar), Rathore and Anil (Lap Assistants).
Anaesthesia was provided by Dr Jyoti and team
The 60 yrs old male patient presented with anaemia and was diagnosed to have right sided colon cancer on colonoscopy and Ct Scan. Incidentally, patient was having single kidney which was closely abutting the tumor and hence demanded profound laparoscopic surgical skills.
Patient was planned for laparoscopic right hemicolectomy (removal of right sided large intestine, portion of small intestine and part of transverse colon) and plan was executed to perfection. Patient behaved well in the post operative period and was discharged on 5th post operative day in satisfactory State.
Dr Bhat, who has undergone advanced training in gastro intestinal cancers and laparoscopic surgery at Medanta, Gurgaon, has attended various national and international workshops and training programmes.
Dr Tariq Azad (senior laparoscopic surgeon) and team expressed the desire to perform such complex procedures in future also and requested the relevant authorities to provide requisite infrastructural support at the earliest.
