KARGIL, Nov 28: Advisor to Lieutenant Governor Ladakh Umang Narula stressed for early opening of Kargil-Srinagar road for vehicular traffic so that safe passage of passengers from both sides to their respective destinations and the supply of essential commodities to Ladakh is ensured.
To take stock of the snow clearance operations underway at the Zojila axis and other locations post fresh snowfall, the Advisor called a meeting of the BRO and Civil officers here today.
Chief Engineer Project Vijayak Brig Amit Sohal, Additional Deputy Commissioner Kargil Sonam Chosjor besides other concerned officers of BRO and Civil Administration attended the meeting.
During the course of the meeting, Chief Engineer Project Vijayak informed the Advisor that snow clearance operations are in full swing from both ends of the Zojila pass, men and machines are on the job and efforts are on to restore the highway as early as possible.
The Advisor was further informed that snow clearance teams are carrying out clearance operations from multiple locations at Baltal, Gumri, Minamarg and Drass and the road will be cleared by tomorrow evening.
The Chief Engineer said that clearance would be given to vehicles first once the road is made traffic-worthy and the highway is expected to be thrown open for vehicular traffic by 30th November, 2019.
The Chief Engineer further said that adequate preparations for snow clearance have been put in place by both Vijayak and Beacon authorities from Kargil as well Srinagar side this year and for the first time Beacon is assisting Vijayak in snow clearance works from Kargil side.
Meanwhile, the Advisor asked the BSNL and BRO authorities to keep BSNL towers around Baltal area in working condition during the movement of vehicles on the highway.
He also inquired from the concerned officers about the arrangements of relief being made by the District Administration for the stranded passengers and directed them to provide them all possible facilities.
