SRINAGAR, Feb 21: The Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization (NLCO) today started the cleaning drive of the Khushal Sar and other water bodies in Srinagar in collaboration with Srinagar Municipal Corporation and PSAJK.
The drive is all set to continue for one month during which these water bodies will be cleaned with the help of people who have volunteered for the work along with the logistical support being provided by the SMC.
Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo, who is heading the NLCO said that there was a need for setting an example under missing Ahsaas-an initiative of restoring Kashmir’s traditional navigation routes.
The volunteers associated with the NLCO, he said, will be carrying out the cleaning process for the next one month.
Notably, the Khushal Sar as well as Gilsar does not come under anyone’s control. While the LAWDA states that it does not fall under its control, the SMC has also made it clear that it does not fall under their control.
“There is a need of giving control of these lakes to some authority so that these water bodies are preserved which will also help in making sure that there are no encroachments,” Manzoor Ahmad Wangnoo said.
He also appealed to the LAWDA to provide them with the machinery that can be used to effectively clean the water bodies.
“There is a need for high-tech machines in the cleaning of the Khusal Sar and for that, we appeal to the LAWDA to provide us such machines, while as the SMC is already providing us with the trucks to transport the garbage,” he said.
He said that it has been the indifference of people which has turned this water body into marshy land. “We are committed to clean it like we did the Nigeen Lake, we will make this water body drinkable, fishable, we will try to make it that way,” he said.
President Private Schools Association of Jammu and Kashmir (PSAJK) G.N.Var who was also present on the occasion said that the Association will help the NLCO in whatever way possible and that there is a need for inculcating a sense of environmental preservation in the schools.
