Agriculture Minister, German Ambassador meet Governor

SRINAGAR, July 19: Ghulam Hassan Mir, Minister for Agriculture, called on N. N. Vohra, Governor, at Raj Bhavan here this evening.
The Governor and Mr. Mir discussed the longer term adverse consequences of climate change on the agricultural and horticultural productivity of the State and the measures which must be implemented in the short and medium term. They also discussed issues arising from the growing shortages of water faced in several areas and the need for urgent steps being taken by farmers and growers to optimize available moisture resources.
The Governor and the Minister also discussed issues relating to delays in democratic decentralization.
Mr. Michael Steiner, German Ambassador to India, also called on Mr Vohra.
The Governor and Mr. Steiner discussed issues arising from the world wide economic draw down and several important matters relating to the strong bi-lateral ties between the two countries.
They also discussed the possibilities of German investors assisting the establishment of business and commercial ventures for the rapid economic growth of J&K, particularly in the areas in which the State was keen to secure foreign collaboration.
The Governor and Mr. Steiner also held discussions in regard to the opportunities available for the youth of the State to pursue their education at the centres of higher learning in Germany, as well as availing job opportunities there.
It is pertinent to recall that the Governor, as the founder Co-Chairman of the Indo-European Union Round Table during 2001-08, has had extensive experience of promoting bi-lateral and multi-lateral understandings between India and the European Union countries.
