JAMMU, June 24: After the party’s debacle in the recently held Lok Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir and ahead of upcoming Assembly elections in the UT of J&K, Congress high command has summoned JKPCC chief Vikar Rasool Wani, working president Raman Bhalla, party candidate from Udhampur, Ch Lal Singh and other senior party leaders to hold crucial meeting on the issue and discuss fresh strategy.

A party spokesman said that JKPCC president, Vikar Rasool Wani, along with both the party candidates Raman Bhalla (Working president) from Jammu seat, and Ch Lal Singh from Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency, have reached Delhi for this crucial meeting being held on June 27, most probably during afternoon in the AICC office in the Union capital.
“Besides these leaders, all the former Ministers and ex-Legislators, JKPCC senior vice presidents, vice presidents and heads of frontal organizations of the party have been invited for this meeting in Delhi on coming Thursday,” the spokesman added.
Party sources said though Congress Party has gained vote percentage in the recently held Parliamentary elections during this year as compared by 2019 General Elections, yet the party has failed to win any seat in the Jammu and Kashmir. As compared to vote share of 36% of Cong and allies and 47% of the BJP during 2019 elections, Congress and its allies secured vote percentage of 50.16% as compared to 24% of BJP in the Jammu and Kashmir during 2024 elections. About 10% increase in the vote share has been secured by the Congress alone during these LS elections, sources added.
Referring to a letter flashed to the party high command in Delhi recently by some Congress leaders from Kashmir, raising allegations against the party president in J&K, Vikar Rasool Wani for not consulting senior party leaders and his alleged ‘arrogant behaviour’, the party sources said that the issue may come under discussion during the upcoming meeting, however, the prime focus is likely to remain on the discussion on fresh strategy and weakness and strengths of the party in various Assembly segments in the Jammu and Kashmir.
“The AICC leadership is unlikely to remove the JKPCC chief as demanded in the letter by some leaders from Kashmir at this crucial stage, however, the AICC president may stress upon the J&K leadership to remain united and rise above the narrow differences, if any, for the betterment of the party and its health in view of the next Assembly polls,” sources added.
“The Congress high command may also discuss the performance of the party in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, conduct self- introspection on the reasons behind failure in Jammu and Udhampur LS constituencies and prepare a strong and effective roadmap for the upcoming Assembly elections in the Jammu and Kashmir,” the party sources added.
While referring to the constitution of Fact Finding Committees by the AICC president to conduct a probe and assessment on poor performance of the party in various States, a JKPCC leader said that J&K do not fall in this list. The letter issued by the AICC general secretary (org), K C Venugopal has mentioned about the States like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka and Telangana.
He said most of the other Congress leaders from J&K are likely to reach Delhi on Wednesday or Thursday morning, for the meeting being held in the afternoon on June 27.
