JAMMU, Aug 27: The All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Jammu has launched Fundus Fluorescein Angiography (FFA) services in its Department of Ophthalmology, marking a significant advancement in eye care for the region. This state-of-the-art service will provide residents of Jammu, as well as neighbouring areas, with access to advanced diagnostic capabilities, previously unavailable locally.
Fundus Fluorescein Angiography is a critical procedure used to diagnose and manage various retinal and vascular conditions, including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and retinal vein occlusion. The introduction of FFA at AIIMS Jammu eliminates the need for patients to travel long distances for this specialized diagnostic test, ensuring timely and accurate diagnosis and better management of eye conditions.
The procedure is performed in the specialized Retina lab under the supervision of Dr. Nitin Kumar, Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at AIIMS Jammu. The optometrist team, including Bhavya Kapoor, Sohail Sheikh, and Gagan Jha, along with a team of nursing officers, successfully conducted the first diagnostic tests.
“The introduction of FFA at AIIMS Jammu is a significant step forward in our mission to provide specialized eye care,” said Dr. Nitin Kumar. “This advanced imaging technique allows us to detect retinal diseases early, enabling us to offer prompt and effective treatment.”
The FFA procedure involves injecting a fluorescent dye into the bloodstream, which highlights the blood vessels in the retina. Specialized cameras then capture detailed images, helping ophthalmologists identify any abnormalities or blockages.
Prof. (Dr) Shakti Kumar Gupta, ED and CEO of AIIMS Jammu, emphasized that this new service is part of the institute’s broader goal to become a center of excellence in healthcare and medical education in North India. The introduction of FFA services at AIIMS Jammu aligns with the institute’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to patients in Jammu and neighbouring regions.
