Srinagar, Oct 25: The All J&K Transporters’ Welfare Association (AJKTWA) today sought the resolution of issues faced by transporters and the formulation of a transport policy, which has been missing for years.
Addressing a press conference here, the newly elected Chairman of the association, Karan Singh Wazir, expressed high hopes for the new Government, stating that it will work towards resolving the issues faced by the sector.
“We have formed a core committee that will discuss the issues confronting the sector and then create a memorandum detailing these issues, which will be submitted to the government,” he said, stressing that policies must be formed for the welfare of transporters.
Assuring his dedication to continuing the legacy of his late father, T.S. Wazir, a former legislator and founding Chairman of the J&K Transport Welfare Association, Karan promised transporters that his prime focus will be the welfare of everyone associated with the transport trade.
One of the members of the association, Muhammad Yousuf, spoke on the occasion, detailing the issues faced by transporters and emphasizing the “mess” created by the “unregulated” operations of smart buses and e-rickshaws.
“There is no transport policy, and those involved in transport are facing difficulties. The e-buses, rickshaws, and outside state vehicles operating here have created issues, along with the illegal operation of SRTC in Srinagar,” he said.
While expressing hope that the new Government will take the lead in resolving these issues, he noted that the failures of previous Governments have contributed to the current mess facing the sector.
He added that the genuine demands of transporters have gone unheard for a long time and that it is high time for all transport bodies from both regions to play their role in easing the difficulties faced by the trade.
Kashmir-based transport bodies, including transport owners’ associations and unions of drivers and cleaners, have expressed their satisfaction with Karan Singh Wazir’s leadership.
