JAMMU, Feb 21: A man found guilty of public intoxication and disorderly conduct has been sentenced to community service in Akhnoor under the new criminal laws.
A police official said Amit Mehra, a resident of Kot Garhi, Akhnoor, was arrested on February 18 after being caught intoxicated and causing a disturbance in a public area.
Instead of opting for a traditional jail sentence, he said, the Court of JMIC Akhnoor delivered a reformative judgment, ordering Mehra to perform community service at the local old age home.
As part of the service, the police official said, Mehra was ordered to work for one hour each day from 21st February to 27th February 2025 at the old age home.
This new approach to handling minor offences emphasized rehabilitation and community engagement, aligning with the goals of the BNS (New Criminal Laws) which focus on reform over punishment.
