JAMMU, Dec 17: Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) and Transport, Qamar Ali Akhoon, today laid foundation stone of the office building of the Legal Metrology Department at Narwal.
The Minister was informed that the double storey building, being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 95 lakh by the Jammu and Kashmir Housing Board, will have main office, besides 3 laboratories of Legal Metrology being set up under the Centrally sponsored scheme “Strengthening of Weights and Measures in State and Union Territories (UTs)”. One secondary standard and 2 working standard laboratories are being set up in Jammu, the Minister was informed.
Interacting with the officers , the Minister asked them to effectively enforce accuracies in weight and measures, commerce and industrial transactions, sale of commodities at printed price of manufacturers and packers, to ensure that the consumers get due value of the money they spent. He asked for periodical verification and stamping of meters in Auto-rickshaws, Taxis, weight and measures used in commerce and industrial units. He also called for conducting surprise inspections to detect violation of the provisions of the Legal Metrology Laws and take legal action against erring traders and industrialists.
The Minister also directed for strengthening of weight & measures laboratories at State, division, district and sub-division levels.
Secretary CA&PD, Muhammad Abbas Dar, Director CA&PD Parvaiz Ahmad Malik, Managing Director J&K Housing Board and senior officers of Legal Metrology Department, the President Consumers Welfare Association Vikram Gour, Secretary CWA, Chander Prakash, President Consumer Protection Organization D. R. Danish, Senior Vice President S. Ajaib Singh, General Secretary B. M. Kohli and President Federation of Retailers Association Yashpaul were present on the occasion.
Later, the Minister conducted a surprise visit to the office of Regional Transport Officer (RTO) Jammu and checked the attendance register of the staff. He stressed upon the employees to provide the transporters and vehicle owners single window service. He said efficient service could help to curb the malpractices in the department and improve the revenue collection.
